WHAT IS GLOBAL OUTREACH SUNDAY?

GO Sunday is a one-day event designed to mobilize and equip the swbible community to be supporters and workers in our global outreach mission. Our mission is to know Jesus and make him known—starting in our own community and extending throughout the world so that all nations may know him and praise him!

LEARN

We will spend time digging into God’s word and be captured by his heart for all the nations.

PRAY

We will devote time in prayer for the nations and for our brothers and sisters across the globe who are preaching the gospel and making disciples.

RESPOND

We will respond by taking action to partner with our GO Workers through care, prayer, and financial support or by taking steps to move toward going to the nations.

John

John & Mary joined the staff of Cru in 1978. They began their ministry with Athletes in Action (the sports ministry of Cru) at the University of Texas. Feeling called by God to a lifetime of ministry, John decided to pursue a seminary degree as an investment in that future. They moved to Oregon in 1986 to attend Western Seminary and become part of SWBIBLE. They ministered to many people at our church during those years, and John led several evangelistic and discipleship efforts. After John graduated from Western, they spent the next 8 years in New Zealand where they were involved in evangelism and discipleship with university students at Auckland University. They also helped start Auckland Bible Church. As God raised up laborers in NZ, John & Mary focused on equipping those laborers to become leaders for the ministry of the gospel. In 1996, they turned the ministry over to NZers and moved to Budapest, Hungary where John became the Leader Development Coordinator for the 20 countries of Cru-Eastern Europe. For the past 26 years, he has been discipling, equipping and investing in the next generation of missionaries and pastors in this part of the world.

BREAKOUT SESSIONS - 10 am

GO Short, GO Long: How SWBIBLE does Global Outreach

Carl and “C” | Room 223

What biblical priorities and principles drive how Global Outreach is done at SWBIBLE? What should I know to be a good home-base sending member of our GO Workforce? How does someone become a long-term GO worker of SWBIBLE? How can I learn what God is doing with and through them? How do I support them in prayer, financially, and/or administratively from back here on the home front? How are SWBIBLE GO Short teams strategic? How might I join a future team?

Teacher Bios:

Carl serves as the Global Outreach pastor at SWBIBLE. He became interested in global outreach at a Campus Crusade Christmas conference when he realized that the gospel was for the whole world.

“C” has served overseas as a long-term global outreach worker for the last 7 years. Over the last 10 years, he has also served leading and facilitating short-term teams from Southwest Bible Church.

Eradicating Barriers: How to fulfill the Great Commission Amongst Muslims

Samuel Hakim | GYM

Two billion people identify themselves as Muslim — making Islam the second largest religion in the world. The Harvest among Muslims is unprecedented! Muslims are becoming part of our community more and more as refugees move to Portland. In order to witness to them, we need to understand their beliefs and culture to build bridges with them.

Jesus died to pay for their salvation, and He commands us to GO share the Good News — let's become more equipped to share the Gospel with our neighbors!

Teacher Bio: Samuel Hakim is the founder and President of “Redeeming the Nations Ministries“, an Arabic Media Ministry to reach the Arabic-speaking world with the Good News of Jesus Christ.  Born into a nominal Coptic Christian family in Cairo, Egypt, at age 14, Samuel accepted Jesus as his personal Savior.

He continued his studies in Egypt and graduated from Cairo University with an accounting degree while also attending Bible College. As God started to reveal His purpose of bringing Samuel and his family to North America, he was challenged to use the opportunity to impact the Arab world as well as millions of Arabs in the West.

Samuel’s passion and dream is to give every Muslim a chance to hear the Gospel at least once in their own language.

Prayer

God responds to the prayers of His people. Come and be encouraged by stories of how God has worked through prayer in the ministries of our GO workers around the world.

Paul Williams and others | ROOM 121

Teacher Bio: Paul and Linda Williams were raised in Beaverton, Oregon. They have served with Wycliffe Bible Translators for over 40 years. They have 5 children and 3 grandchildren. Beginning in 1981, they worked on Bible translation with the Bribri people of Costa Rica for 25 years. The Bribri people number about 10,000. The New Testament in Bribri was presented to the people in 2007 and has been widely distributed. Some Old Testament portions were also translated.

Since then, Paul and Linda have resided in Tigard, Oregon, where Paul works with an international team to produce a Spanish version of the verse-by-verse Bible translation guides called Translator’s Notes. Translator’s Notes is the resource most requested by Bible translation teams worldwide. The Spanish version is primarily used by the numerous Bible translation teams in Central and South America.  Indigenous translators use them to translate the Bible more accurately and independently into their own native languages. Pray that good progress will continue to be made to meet this need.

GO Care: Practical ways to care for the GO Workforce

Linda & Alicia | Room 221

Equip yourself to encourage Global Workers as we discuss ideas and ways to care and pray for our GO Workers both on the field and at home, as well as understanding how to relate to MKs (Missionary Kids). Get hands-on with sign-ups for specific ways to be involved.

Teacher Bios:

Linda first became interested in global outreach after becoming a believer in her teens, through exposure to the many global workers of Progress Bible Church. The Lord confirmed this interest after working at a Mexican orphanage. She joined Paul in Bible translation in Costa Rica among the Bribri for 25 years. She loves for people to become educated about other cultures and people groups throughout the world.

Alicia felt a strong conviction from a young age that God was calling her to be willing to follow Him wherever He led. She did not think that would necessarily be overseas, and she never anticipated spending the better part of 15 years in West Africa as part of a bush hospital outreach alongside her husband and children. She enjoys mentoring global outreach workers.

Today’s Hope, the hope of tomorrow’s Church

a discussion of ministry in the 4 - 14 window

REACHING THE 4-14 WINDOW: The 4-14 window references that vital decade between age four to fourteen when eighty percent of all Christians make their decision to follow Christ. The original 4-14 mission, BCM International was founded in 1936 with the express objective of bringing children to Christ and equipping the local church to reach children.  Eighty-seven years later, BCM reaches 1.5 million children directly each year along with children’s ministry training partnerships with national church denominations across five continents. BCM president emeritus Dr. Marty Windle and his wife Jeanette have been involved in children’s ministry for over 45-years. This breakout session will tell that story and address the urgency and the practicalities of reaching this generation’s 4-14 window with the gospel.

Marty Windle | Auditorium

Teacher Bio: Marty is President of Bible Centered Ministries International (BCM). BCM is a nondenominational mission organization with 750+ missionaries in over 50 countries across five continents. He travels extensively and has ministered in more than 40 countries.
