Singleness Seminar

Sept 1 | Written by Casimir Barksdale

The Singleness Seminar was held in a small room with a couch with as many chairs as would fit in a circle around the room. All such seats were quickly filled and the floor became densely populated as young adults came and settled in. There were an abundance of snacks and treats which were passed around as friendly conversation was had as the singles seminar talk was anticipated.

Erin started the seminar with sharing her testimony, elaborating on her experience with singleness, and what she has learned and how she has grown in this season. Matt followed suit sharing his story and perspective, and then the rest of the talk ensued.

Some points and themes that stood out to me are as follows:

As a single person, you have less responsibilities and more time and freedom that can be used for the Lord. This being the case we were encouraged to be intentional with this gift and be open to use our time and resources for the Lord’s work.

Another point that was discussed was contentment. As a single person, it is easy to always be looking towards and yearning for the future and what you have planned for it instead of seeking the Lord’s will for you in the present. We were encouraged to be content in the Lord, and to not have our identity and thoughts set upon what we plan to do in the future. As a single person, it may be the Lord’s will that you will be married, but right now He has you in this season on singleness, so take advantage of the time you have to grow closer to the Lord and do his work!

Some Scripture passages from the seminar:

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” - Proverbs 3:5-6

“I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife, and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.” - 1 Corinthians 7:32-35

“Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” - Philippians 4:11-13

“Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” - 1 Peter 1:13
